Postpartum Care

Society will tell you, “you will never get your old body back”. We are here to tell you that your body was designed for what it just went through and has the ability to heal!

It should be standard care for every mother to receive pelvic therapy after both Cesarean and vaginal births to ensure the body is healing appropriately, but it is not. For this reason, we offer postpartum wellness visits to guide you through recovery. Although an internal assessment will not be performed until you are cleared from your birth provider (generally around week 6), we recommend being seen in our office as early as week 2 postpartum.

Clear signs you need to seek care for obstetric services:

  • Any musculoskeletal pain such as within the back, pelvis, or hips
  • Difficulty returning to any of your daily duties or hobbies
  • Gap in the middle of your abdomen or known diastasis recti abdominis
  • Feelings of pelvic heaviness or known pelvic organ prolapse
  • Perineal tearing during vaginal birth
  • Cesarean birth (this is a major abdominal surgery)
  • Leaking urine (no, it is not normal to leak when coughing and sneezing)
  • Clogged milk ducts

Services provided in postpartum

  • Individualized therapeutic exercise focused on deep core and pelvic floor rehabilitation
  • Manual therapy techniques focused on ensuring proper joint mobility, alignment, and addressing muscle, myofasical, and ligamentous restrictions (internal assessment and treatment is beneficial for many women, but only performed per patient’s comfort level)
  • Self care eduction regarding anatomical changes, appropriate bracing, kinesiotaping, movement strategies, breastfeeding positions, and scar tissue massage
  • Ultrasound and manual lymphatic drainage to clear clogged milk ducts
